Hello everyone! How is everyone doing? This week we talk about a lot but I want to focus on Engagement. How you get engaged is very important. Our class decided that your proposal should have 3 things.
1. It should be clear and defined. It needs to be something that you can both clearly remember. It should not be something like “hey, we should get marriage sometime.” Only “Will you marry me?” will cut it. It has to have a ring and a date.
2. Focused on the two of you. It should not be about your families or the awesome video, or the big production you are putting on. Big crowds put too much pressure on the women to say yes even if she doesn’t want to and the pressure make the man even more nervous than he normally is. It needs to be something that is special for the two of you even if no one else would understand.
3. Ask the parents/family. It may seem old fashioned but asking for your bride-to-be’s hand in very important. For one thing it shows respect for her and for the role the family has played in her life. You are asking to take her primary role in their family as a daughter/sister and put as a secondary to the new role of your wife. It is the point that you define a new unit in the family. The scripture say “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh” Genesis 2:24. The same is true for your bride-to be, she is leaving her father and mother to cleave unto you, her husband.
The way you get engaged can set the stage for the kind of marriage you will have. Let's set it up right.
